National Transport Insurance (NTI)

About National Transport Insurance

National Transport Insurance (NTI) is Australia’s leading, specialist insurer for the transport, logistics and construction industries. With almost five decades of experience, NTI protects businesses of all shapes and sizes – from small, family businesses to large national operations.

The Challenge

NTI retains a full, comprehensive development capability in-house. However, when they identified an opportunity to launch a new line of business, they found themselves loaded with backlogs of work and limited capacity to take on additional projects. The opportunity required immediate focus and an aggressive deadline. While NTI knew they had the skills, they didn't have the bandwidth to take on the additional work in parallel.

"Having engaged Patient Zero before, I knew their cross-functional delivery teams would align to our needs and hit the ground running. PZ helped keep our business stakeholders consulted and accountable for scope and feature-based decisions, making my life easier when it came to managing expectations around scope and timelines. We love the PZ engagement style because NTI was in complete control over the contents of each sprint. PZ encouraged us to assess quality upon completion of every sprint, ensuring no surprises at the end of the project."

The Solution

Having engaged external parties before, NTI turned to Patient Zero as a partner that could provide a cross-functional delivery team, including diverse skills such as product management, UI/UX, front-end and back-end engineering, and automated testing. They needed a team that could hit the ground running and deliver high-quality work without sacrificing deadlines. Additionally, NTI required a partner that could align with their technical roadmap, and ensure that the software delivered could be supported once the project was completed.

Patient Zero initially engaged in a focused Discovery exercise to ensure alignment with both the technical and feature roadmap. Immediately following this, Patient Zero deployed two cross-functional development teams to deliver a full-stack solution across three applications that made up the product. The teams covered the end-to-end flows for various roles within the purchasing lifecycle. Claim processing was based on automated rules, providing a technological solution that was sophisticated and efficient.

NTI opted for a hybrid team, combining a developer from NTI within the Patient Zero team to maximize handover throughout the project. Each two-week sprint engaged business stakeholders in requirements elicitation and showcases, ensuring ongoing alignment between all stakeholders on the application's capabilities. From the first two weeks, and every two weeks thereafter, NTI saw working software demonstrated at the showcases. The PZ engagement-style encouraged NTI to assess the quality upon completion of every sprint, ensuring no surprises at the end of the project.

The Outcome

By collaborating with Patient Zero, NTI managed to introduce their latest insurance offering as scheduled, completing the task within a span of 6 months. The technology aligned with NTI's roadmap, allowing them to maintain the application after the project was completed. The feature set launched has set up NTI to launch the product into market on time and on budget.
